Documents you need to join a medical aid
By Naledi Mokoena · 4 min read · Updated 24 June 2026

To join a medical aid you need your South African ID, proof of income or payslip, banking details for the debit order, and certificates for any dependants you add. If you are switching schemes, your membership certificate from the old scheme is the most important document, because it can waive waiting periods.
This checklist covers everything to gather before you apply, so the application is not delayed.
Have it all ready and most applications are approved within days rather than weeks.
The core documents checklist
For the main member:
- Certified copy of your South African ID (or passport and permit for non-citizens).
- Proof of income or a recent payslip.
- Banking details and proof of bank account for the debit order.
- Your email and cellphone number for the scheme to contact you.
- A completed application form from the scheme or broker.
Documents for dependants
- Spouse or partner: marriage certificate or proof of partnership, plus their ID.
- Children: birth certificate and ID for each child.
- Student dependant over the age limit: proof of full-time study.
- Other dependant (such as a parent): proof of dependency, subject to scheme approval.
Each dependant adds to your contribution, so confirm the new amount when you apply.
The membership certificate (the big one)
If you are moving from another scheme, get your membership certificate from the old scheme before you join. It shows your cover dates and which waiting periods you have already served. With no break in cover, this certificate can waive general and condition-specific waiting periods on the new scheme. Without it, you may serve waiting periods you have already done elsewhere.
Extra documents that speed things up
- A doctor's note or script if you want chronic medicine registered from day one.
- Proof of any pre-existing condition, so the scheme assesses waiting periods upfront rather than at first claim.
- The previous scheme's tax certificate if you are mid-year, for your SARS return.
Gathering these now avoids a scramble when you first need to claim.
Frequently asked questions
What documents do I need to join a medical aid?
Your South African ID, proof of income or a payslip, banking details for the debit order, and certificates for any dependants. If you are switching schemes, also bring your membership certificate from the old scheme, which can waive waiting periods.
Why is a membership certificate so important?
It records your previous cover dates and waiting periods served. With no break in cover, it lets the new scheme waive general and condition-specific waiting periods. Without it, you risk serving waiting periods you have already completed elsewhere.
What documents do I need for my children?
A birth certificate and ID for each child. For a student dependant over the normal age limit, the scheme usually asks for proof of full-time study. Add these when you apply so the dependants are loaded without delay.
Do I need proof of income to join?
Often yes, especially on income-rated schemes and restricted schemes that price by salary band. Open schemes that price by plan and dependants may still ask for it to confirm affordability and set the debit order.
Can I register chronic medicine when I join?
Yes. Bring a doctor's script and the ICD-10 code so the scheme can register chronic cover from the start. Otherwise your medicine may come off savings until the chronic application is approved. See our CDL application template.
How long does a medical aid application take?
With all documents ready, approval is often within a few days. Missing dependant certificates or a membership certificate are the usual causes of delay, so gather everything on this checklist before you apply.
