Discovery Health Medical Scheme is South Africa's largest open medical scheme by membership, administered by Discovery Health and offering plans from the entry-level network KeyCare range up to comprehensive Executive cover. It suits people who want a wide plan ladder, a large provider network and a well-developed app, and who can pay for that breadth.
The scheme runs several plan series: KeyCare (network, income-based options), Coastal, Saver, Smart, Priority, Comprehensive and Executive. Day-to-day cover on Saver and above runs through a medical savings account, while KeyCare and hospital plans have limited or no day-to-day savings.
Discovery is not the cheapest option. Lower-cost network plans from other schemes can beat KeyCare on price. Read the plan rules for waiting periods, late-joiner penalties and network restrictions before you commit.
Plan range and who each suits
Discovery's ladder is wide, so match the plan to your needs and budget, not the brand.
- KeyCare (network / income-based): lowest-cost tier, you use a defined hospital and doctor network. Suits healthy members and lower earners.
- Smart series: network plans with a digital-first, lower premium. Suits younger members comfortable using the app and network providers.
- Coastal and Saver: add a medical savings account for day-to-day. Suits families who want some flexibility.
- Priority, Comprehensive, Executive: broader cover, above-threshold benefits and higher limits. Suits members with chronic or specialist needs who can pay more.
Indicative contribution bands
Contributions below are indicative bands to show where a plan type usually sits. They are not quotes. Always confirm the current year's rates on the scheme's own site before you decide.
| Plan type | Entry contribution (indicative, per adult) | Hospital cover | Day-to-day | Network restriction |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Network / KeyCare | from roughly R1,200 to R1,900 | Private network hospitals | Limited / clinic visits | Yes |
| Hospital plan | from roughly R1,900 to R2,800 | Any private hospital | From own pocket | No |
| Savings | from roughly R2,800 to R4,500 | Any private hospital | Medical savings account | No |
| Comprehensive | from roughly R5,500 upward | Any private hospital | Savings plus above-threshold | No |
Benefits and chronic cover
All Discovery plans cover the 26 chronic conditions on the Prescribed Minimum Benefit (PMB) list. Higher plans add cover for an extended chronic disease list and a wider screening and prevention benefit. Vitality is a separate, paid rewards programme, not the medical cover itself. Check whether a specific medicine, scan or specialist is covered in full or subject to a co-payment on your chosen plan.
Waiting periods and late-joiner penalties
New members can face up to a 3-month general waiting period and a 12-month condition-specific waiting period on pre-existing conditions, as allowed by the Medical Schemes Act. If you join a scheme for the first time after age 35 without prior cover, a late-joiner penalty may be added to your contribution for as long as you stay a member. PMBs must still be covered even during waiting periods in genuine emergencies - confirm the detail with the scheme.
How to join and claim
Join through discovery.co.za, the Discovery app or a registered financial adviser. Network providers usually claim directly from the scheme. For other claims, submit through the app or member portal. Keep authorisation numbers for any planned hospital admission, since failing to pre-authorise can lead to a co-payment.
If a scheme does not resolve a complaint, you can escalate to the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) at medicalschemes.co.za, the statutory regulator for all registered medical schemes in South Africa.
Frequently asked questions
Is Discovery Health the best medical aid in South Africa?
It is the largest open scheme and has the widest plan range, but best depends on your budget and needs. A network plan from another scheme can be cheaper for similar hospital cover. Compare on a like-for-like plan type.
What is the cheapest Discovery plan?
The KeyCare network and income-based options are the entry tier. They restrict you to a defined network of hospitals and doctors in exchange for a lower contribution. Confirm current rates on discovery.co.za.
Does Discovery cover pre-existing conditions?
Yes, but a condition-specific waiting period of up to 12 months may apply to a pre-existing condition, and a 3-month general waiting period may apply when you join. PMB conditions are still covered subject to scheme rules.
What is the difference between Discovery KeyCare and Classic?
KeyCare is a lower-cost network plan with limited day-to-day and a defined provider network. Classic plans sit higher, add a larger savings account and remove the network restriction. The price gap is significant.
Is Vitality included in Discovery medical aid?
No. Vitality is a separate paid rewards and wellness programme. You can have Discovery Health cover without it. Do not assume Vitality benefits are part of your medical scheme contribution.
How do I claim from Discovery?
Network providers usually claim directly. For other claims, use the Discovery app or member portal. Pre-authorise planned hospital admissions to avoid a co-payment, and keep your authorisation number.
Does Discovery have a late-joiner penalty?
Yes. If you first join a medical scheme after age 35 without continuous prior cover, a late-joiner penalty can be added to your monthly contribution under the Medical Schemes Act, and it can last for the rest of your membership.
