Momentum Health, the Momentum Medical Scheme, offers a modular plan range from the low-cost Ingwe network plan up to the comprehensive Summit option, suiting members who like to build cover from a hospital base and add day-to-day or savings as needed through a flexible, digital-first member experience on Momentum's app.

Plans include Ingwe (income-based network), Custom, Incentive, Extender and Summit. Day-to-day is handled through a combination of plan benefits and an optional HealthSaver facility you fund yourself. Health4Me is a separate health insurance product, not a medical scheme - do not confuse the two.

Check the network on Ingwe, the savings structure on higher plans, and the usual waiting periods before joining.

Plan range and who each suits

  • Ingwe (income-based network): lowest cost, uses a network and scales with income. Suits lower earners and young members.
  • Custom: hospital cover plus chronic, with day-to-day from your own HealthSaver. Suits members who self-manage day-to-day.
  • Incentive and Extender: add structured day-to-day benefits and savings. Suit families.
  • Summit: the comprehensive top tier with the widest cover. Suits members with significant ongoing needs.

Health4Me and similar products are health insurance, not a registered medical scheme, so their cover works differently.

Indicative contribution bands

Contributions below are indicative bands to show where a plan type usually sits. They are not quotes. Always confirm the current year's rates on the scheme's own site before you decide.

Benefits, HealthSaver and chronic cover

Momentum covers the 26 PMB chronic conditions, with extended chronic cover on higher plans. HealthSaver is a savings facility you top up yourself to pay for day-to-day costs, which is different from a built-in medical savings account that is funded from your contribution. Understand which mechanism your chosen plan uses so you are not caught short on day-to-day expenses.

Waiting periods and penalties

A 3-month general waiting period and up to a 12-month condition-specific waiting period can apply when you join, and a late-joiner penalty may apply if you first take cover after age 35 without prior continuous membership. These apply across registered schemes under the Medical Schemes Act.

How to join and claim

Join via momentum.co.za, the Momentum app or a registered adviser. Network providers on Ingwe claim directly. For other claims, submit via the app or portal, and remember to pre-authorise planned hospital admissions.

If a scheme does not resolve a complaint, you can escalate to the Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) at medicalschemes.co.za, the statutory regulator for all registered medical schemes in South Africa.

Frequently asked questions

Is Ingwe a Momentum medical aid plan?

Yes. Ingwe is Momentum Health's income-based network plan, the entry tier of the Momentum Medical Scheme. The contribution scales with income and you use a defined network of hospitals and doctors.

Is Momentum Health4Me a medical aid?

No. Health4Me is a health insurance product, not a registered medical scheme. It works differently from medical aid, with stated benefit amounts rather than scheme cover and PMBs. Read its terms separately.

What is HealthSaver on Momentum?

HealthSaver is an optional savings facility you fund yourself to pay day-to-day medical costs. It is separate from a built-in medical savings account that comes from your contribution. You choose how much to put in.

What is the cheapest Momentum plan?

Ingwe, the income-based network plan, is the entry tier and usually the lowest cost for qualifying earners. Custom is the lowest hospital-plus option. Confirm current rates on momentum.co.za.

Does Momentum cover students?

Momentum markets student-focused options through its range and Health4Me. A registered scheme plan gives you PMB cover, while a health insurance product does not. Check which product a student quote actually is.

Are there waiting periods on Momentum Health?

Yes, a 3-month general and up to a 12-month condition-specific waiting period can apply to new members, plus a possible late-joiner penalty after age 35. These follow the Medical Schemes Act.

How do I claim from Momentum Health?

Network providers claim directly. For other claims, use the Momentum app or member portal. Pre-authorise planned hospital admissions to avoid a co-payment, and keep your authorisation reference.
